Cancer Drugs Fund

On 1st October 2010 The Department of Health provided an extra £50m in funding nationally to help cancer patients get greater access to cancer drugs their doctors recommend for them. This fund was known as the Interim Cancer Drugs Fund and the NHS South Central region was allocated £3.4 million up to the end of March 2011.
In April 2011 a £200 million per year Cancer Drugs Fund Scheme was established nationally of which NHS South Central received £9.3 million.
Doctors make applications to the fund on behalf of their patients. Clinically led panels consider applications individually, putting doctors in charge of deciding how this fund is spent for their patients locally. Applications for some of the more commonly requested cancer drugs may be approved more quickly without the need to be considered by a clinically led panel.
Each month, a summary will be produced on this website showing the number of applications received, the number of applications approved or declined for clinical reasons and an aggregate cost.
Please note, we will not release information that could lead to the identity of any individual patient, neither will we release details of individual costs for drugs which are likely to be commercially in confidence.
