Carbon Reduction

NHS organisations across the South Central region are committed to delivering the national NHS Carbon Reduction Strategy and aim to reduce their carbon emissions by 10 per cent by 2015.
By focusing on carbon saving measures such as building energy usage, travel plans, procurement and waste management, it is estimated that the NHS could save £180 million per year. Across the South Central region, organisations could contribute £18 million per year of the national total.
South Central SHA has established a Carbon Reduction Steering Group to implement the organisation’s Carbon Reduction Management Plan. The Steering Group also contributes to the NHS South Central Carbon Reduction Network. The Network consists of nominated ‘carbon leads’ from each NHS organisation in the region.
During the next few years the focus of both the Steering Group and the Network will be on reducing carbon emissions through improved energy, waste and water usage, followed by business mileage and patient transport miles. The distribution of healthcare goods will also be examined to ensure the system is as carbon efficient as possible and there will be a drive to make better use of IT.
